Today the Jazz Fest Brno International Festival kicks off with a very special guest: American jazz pianist Brad Mehldau and his Brad Mehldau Trio. From March to the end of May, spring in the second largest city in Czech Republic will be filled with European and international music stars. Grammy Award winner Gregory Porter, trumpet maestro Ibrahim Maalouf, the Robert Balzar Trio and the talented trio of Larry Goldings, Peter Bernstein and Bill Stewart are the headliners of the new festival season.

The  Jazz Fest Brno is one of the first European jazz festivals that, every year, mark the beginning of a new spring season filled with top-class music events. Starting from today, the Jazz Fest will present acts from fourteen different countries, who cover a broad variety of music genres.
“This festival season is again varied both in style and ethnic composition,” Artistic Director Vilem Spilka writes on the Jazz Fest website. “We are pleased to host musicians from fourteen countries covering a variety of genres ranging from avant-garde to electronica. When putting together the lineup, we listened to your [jazz fans] inspirations as well as keeping with our continuous search for other talents, sometimes hidden and other times, obvious. Our philosophy is to represent not only jazz legends and superstars, but also, compelling and inspiring musicians, who have previously not performed enough or even at all in the Czech Republic. We have been thoroughly mapping both domestic and European scenes and we never neglect the wonderful community  from the ‘Jazz Mecca’, New York.”

Maestros and the grand finale

The Jazz Fest Brno is going to get really busy in April with a dozen different shows! Paris-based trumpeter Ibrahim Maalouf and the trio comprised of Larry Goldings, Peter Bernstein and Bill Stewart will be the stars of the second month of the Jazz Fest.

Ibrahim Maalouf

Ibrahim Maalouf is one of the most hard-working and talented contemporary trumpet players. The influence of a musical family (his parents are trumpeter Nassim Maalouf and pianist Nada Maalouf,  and he is the nephew of the writer Amin Maalouf and grandson of journalist, poet and musicologist Rushdi Maalouf) and Maalouf’s own love for music are expressed each times he is on stage.

After several sold-out performances in jazz clubs and festivals around the world, Maalouf stops by the Jazz Fest Brno to bring compositions from his recent works – Wind and Illusions – to the Czech audience. His performance is scheduled for April 14th at 7:30pm at the Club Fléda.

The second highlight of the rich April schedule is the sensational trio of organist Larry Goldings, guitarist Peter Bernstein and drummer Bill Stewart. Goldings, a two-time Jazz Journalists Association Award winner (in 2000 and 2001 as Best Organist/Keyboardist of the Year) and Grammy Award-nominee, is one of the most in-demand organists in the world. In addition to his own records, he has appeared in albums of several prominent names including Herbie Hancock, John Pizzarelli, Maceo Parker and John Scofield. Post-Bop and jazz guitarist Peter Bernstein has also performed with numerous artists like Joe Lovano, Diana Krall and Roy Hargrove. In addition, in 2008 he was selected as member of the Blue Note 7, septet formed in honor of the 70th anniversary of Blue Note Records. Drummer Bill Stewart, the final member of the trio, has been enjoying a successful career as well.

The Jazz Fest audience will have the opportunity to listen to the trio on April 24th, at 7:30 at the Goose on the String Theater.

The 2014 edition of the Jazz Fest Brno will end with a very special guest. So far, he released three records, has won the JJA Awards 2013 in the category “Best Male Vocalist” and was recently awarded the Grammy for “Best Jazz Vocal Album” with Liquid Spirityeah, you have probably guessed it by now: he’s Gregory Porter. One of the most popular contemporary jazz singers, Porter has been asked to perform pretty much everywhere (from Singapore and Japan – where he will be performing as member of the all-star band of the International Jazz Day 2014 – to the US and Europe).

His concert on May 25th will not only mark the end of the current season of the Jazz Fest Brno, but it also represents a unique chance for all the jazz fans in Cezech Republic to listen to one of the most talented jazz vocalists in the world.
